Can anyone give me more information on Scotland Neck? maybe someone who actually knows the area? I've been to the town's website, and they make it sound very nice... we found a house that we'd like to do a historical restoration on, and are wondering if it would be a good place to live or not, whether it's safe and whether we'd be “the outsiders” or accepted by the community?

We looked at Scotland Neck to invest... I don't know if that's what you're approaching this as, but you might want to stay away if so, unless you're sure that you're buying well under the local value. The house we looked at needed repairs, and even at the price offered, we weren't sure how well we would be able to actually sell it after rehabing it. From talking to some locals, it seemed as if houses could stay on the market for ages there, even in middling to fair condition.

Thank you Steve... no, we're mostly looking at it for the historic aspect, and as someplace quiet to live, so long as there wouldn't be any hostility.

I think you really should take some time to visit before you make a decision. While I never found anyone in Scotland Neck to be hostile, the town itself is not terribly hospitable. Much of it is deserted, and there's almost no real town to speak of. Maybe a small group of businesses downtown.

If you do buy, don't expect to sell easily. I don't think any new homes have gone in there in quite some time, no one feels as if it's worth the investment when they probably won't be able to find interested buyers.

If you do move there, be ready to make trips for any shopping you need, there are no stores in town.

Really, the people we did meet were nice enough, just the town doesn't offer much at all.

Perfect, Mark! That's just what I needed to know. We really don't mind going out of our way for shopping etc. Thanks!
