Trying to figure out if Alamo will be a good fit for me. I've heard some very conflicting things, some saying that Alamo is a nice are with good outdoor recreation, others saying it's dirty and run down. I'm a simple girl who's happy to stick my nose in a book for entertainment, or head out hiking. I already have a job lined up, but I don't know if I should take it or not. I'll try to visit soon, but can anyone give me some input?
Also, what about other local towns nearby? What's real estate like if I wanted to settle down long term? Any sort of info would be really really helpful.

What kind of information can I help you most with? Alamogordo is a nice town that I think *will* be a goo fit for you, but you'll have to come and see for yourself probably.
It's a beautiful place... a bit hot for some, but the desert is so lovely, especially with the surrounding mountains. If you head up into them, the temperature drops considerably, especially up by Cloudcroft. Personally I prefer it down here in the basin, the desert suits me

well, once concern some have voiced is Alamo is basically Mexican, and if my spanish isn't perfect I won't be able to get along at all. Is this true?

There's a significant hispanic population here, yes, but I wouldn't say that Alamogordo is predominately mexican at all. If you looked up census figures, I'm sure you'd see that non-hispanic make up the larger portion of the city by quite a bit.

Katey, I think you'll probably find Alamogordo very much to your liking, so long as you don't mind being a bit isolated. You'll be at least 40 miles from any other decent sized city... and Las Cruces, the only place you're likely to find more particular goods than a smaller place like Alamogordo will carry is 65 miles away. So definitely take the time to visit, and see if you feel comfortable, or as if you're too cut off.
So far as real estate... it's all very reasonably priced. I'm not sure there's really anywhere in New Mexico, other than major cities maybe, where you won't find places that are very cheap by standards elsewhere in the country.
