We fell in love with Oregon last time we visited from Florida, and we're looking for a change of pace, both for ourselves and our four legged children (two beautiful black labs that we absolutely adore).
The most important thing for us is that wherever we chose be dog friendly, someplace where we can go hiking on trails, leave our babies unleashed (they're extremely obedient and well trained to voice) and spend some time with them getting exercise and having fun.
We're tired of cramped dog runs, and tired of being yelled at and threatened with citations for even when we use retracting long line leashes.
We had looked at both Eugene and Portland when we last visited, they both looked like lovely cities, so please tell me more about these, or your other favorite if you have one!

I see dogs everywhere here. leahsed or not. All over, even in stores, on buses, literally everywhere. I really don't think you'll have a problem, I've never seen an officer cite anyone, except for one owner who brought an obviously uncomfortable dog into a dentist's office and it started growling and snapping. He happened to be walking by, and I don't even know if he wrote anything up, but he did stop the owner as they were leaving and talk with him.,
Oh, I'm sorry, I'm in Portland. And, you'll also find so many great trails and other places to hike here, either in the city or outside it.

I don't know, I'm pretty sure in the busier downtown areas you'll be cited for bringing dogs without leashes... but I've definitely seen many owners... most even... out walking their dogs without leashes in southeast portland. Most shop owners and other people are very friendly to dogs here, it's really not like anyplace else, I think.

It's not just Portland! You did mention Eugene, and we certainly are at least as friendly of a city towards four legged friends. There are hundreds of miles of trails here that go through and around the city, and along the river, and every day you'll see plenty of owners out with their dogs, off leash, hiking or jogging with them along. Even along the beaches there don't seem to be any leash requirements, just signs asking that everyone clean up any messes. And since things do stay clean it seems everyone really does respect their privileges and acts like good citizens!
