So I live in the area (Lancaster actually) and have for a couple years now. My lease will be up in July, so I have a bit of time, but I wanted to know what sort of advice people can give on pedestrian friendly towns. I'm really concerned about my biofootprint, and want to do what I can to conserve. Also, it's just more economical.
So, both Strasburg and Elizabethtown look like they might be built in ways that would make it easy to find a central apartment and then be able to walk to pretty much everywhere in town, or if not use central public transportation. I've visited both and at least had a look, but being a tourist can be a lot different than living there! Anyone have any advice?
I just want someplace safe where I can do my part for the environment, and not feel like I'm forced to be gouged on gas just to go run simple errands.

Elixabethtown is a nice little place with quite a bit going on while still being very safe. Traffic is reasonable, and you'll find plenty at the College in town. There used to be more shopping downtown than you'll find there now, but there's still enough to be found to get by, and there IS a K-Mart on the south side. Also many pretty scenic areas to walk through and relax.

Lititz is a funky name for a funky town, and if you haven't taken a look yet, maybe you should! I think it has a lot of what you're looking for.

I've lived in Lititz for over eight years, and I'd agree with Barn! We have a clean, safe town that I think you'll love, with plenty to do and a wonderful atmosphere. E-town is nice to, and if you haven't looked yet, you should check out Ephrata just to be fair... but I think you'll find that Lititz just has something those two don't! Among others, we have a great community center that encompasses a pool, library and gym all in one. You can get to many places via train, and when a fair or craft show isn't going on, you can visit the pretzel or chocolate factories. Or you can just keep going back to the chocolate factory!
We even have a new hospital just a couple minutes outside of downtown. You'll also have some nicely sized grocery stores in easy distance.

I can't agree more with swooble. Ephrata may be worth a look anyway, but I think you should really focus on Lititz, for everything you're looking for. I don't think you'll find a more perfect match.
