We've gotten two different job offers and are having trouble deciding whether I take the one in Abilene or my husband takes the one in Lubbock. They're both essentially the same pay grade, so that's not an issue, and they're both jobs we'd be happy with... so we'd like to focus on which area would be better for us. Mine is in the same company, and is covering relocation... his is to a new firm, but they'd also cover relocation.

I don't think our budget should be a concern, but we're a bit worried over whether there would be any culture shock. We're used to having bit city amenities and being able to go out at least weekly to some event. We also enjoy a lot of out door activities. Help us pick!

Well, I prefer Abilene myself. But I'm at home raising my kids for the most part, and I like life uncomplicated and quiet. So maybe Abilene wouldn't be a good fit for you. I don't really know if there's much to do in Abilene, though, I've never really looked hard, but then again I rarely hear of much from friends. So probably not to your tastes

Sorry TxMom, you really must not get out much then! There's plenty to do in Abilene. We have our own ballet company, opera company... even a philharmonic and broadway series. With three universities local, there's a lot of culture to be had. It may be a somewhat smaller city, but that's just in its favor, I think! a ton to do for the size, and it also means housing prices are INCREDIBLY good. If budget isn't a concern, you should be able to get yourselves a mansion!

Friendly people, roads that aren't clogged, and a wonderful cost of living... plus you're in easy distance for weekend trips to pretty much everywhere you could ask for. Family friendly, and great schools.

Really, I think it depends on what sort of culture and atmosphere you're into. Abilene does have a lot going for it, but Lubbock has a relatively good sized airport, and great sports teams that will bring you back for more each time. Plus, Lubbock is simply more... urban... than Abilene. Not to say people aren't friendly, just the culture and atmosphere is different. You might find it less of a change if you're in a big city now.
