Perrysburg shares a distinction with our capital city Washington D.C.. It is the only city in the country entirely laid out by the United States Government. This was done in 1816 and it was named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry who had won the Battle of Lake Erie not far away. This battle ended the British occupation on American soil. The city became an important distribution center for Lake Erie. As timber began to be harvested here at the edge of the Great Black Swamp, Perrysburg became an important player in the lumber industry also.
