Welcome to Roxbury! The Township of Roxbury is made up of six communities including Kenvil, Landing, Ledgewood, Berkshire Valley, Port Morris and Succasunna. It covers an area of approximately 22 square miles with a population of 23,227 according to the 2000 Census. It is located at the crossroads of Routes 46, 10 and 80, just 50 miles west of New York City. It is a residential community offering a wide variety of amenities.
Incorporated in 1798, Roxbury Township contains some of the oldest settlements in the county. Original settlements include historic Succasunna, Ledgewood and Kenvil. The Morris Canal, fed by water from Lake Hopatcong, provided transportation and stimulated economic development in the township.
One of the earliest industries in the township was the Hercules Powder Plant. Operations have ceased at the 600-acre site, which is now the focus for redevelopment along the Howard Boulevard/Interstate 80 interchange and Mt. Arlington Park and Ride.
The township has become a major regional shopping destination for the western portion of the county and has been one of the most rapidly growing municipalities in the county.
This township is again sought after because of its proximity to all the local highways and transportation systems. It is scattered with strip malls as well as the Ledgewood mall which hosts such stores as Linen&Things, Home Depot, Sterns, Walmart to name a few. With the vast array of housing types available from Adult housing to condos, townhomes, historic, older and new single family homes it is a very diversified community with availability and affordability for most based on their individual needs.
In academic performance, Roxbury Township students repeatedly exceed national norms on standardized tests of reading, language, mathematics, science and social studies. Also offered is a strong environmental education program. Not far from the Township is the famed Rabbinical College Of America, where students receive a wonderful, rich education.
Morris County, among the fastest growing counties in the New Jersey, New York, Connecticut metropolitan region, nestles amid rolling hills, broad valleys and glittering lakes approximately 30 miles northwest of New York City. Rich in historic lore and tradition, Roxbury combines the natural beauty and pleasant suburban living with proximity to metropolitan surroundings.
Beautiful homes and gardens predominate, both in housing developments, many of them located on the estates of former millionaires, to small country estates. New construction, both residential, commercial and industrial, is constant. The lure of the area, with its many lakes and woods, dates to its days as an Indian territory. It is a very active community and a sense of community pride is evident.
Roxbury Township is located far enough away from the major towns for you to enjoy and be surrounded by the peace and quiet of the country. Roxbury Township would love to welcome you with open arms to a wonderful, thriving community!
