The Borough of Mount Arlington lies along the eastern bank of Lake Hopatcong. Access by railroad shaped Mount Arlington's destiny as a resort community during the second half of the 19th Century. The borough was established in 1890 when it separated from Roxbury Township.
Morris County's Lee's Marina and the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club are popular boating facilities on the lake. More than 500 acres, or 29% of the borough, is publicly owned open space, consisting of parks and active recreation areas and unimproved wooded open space for passive recreation. In recent years, the Howard Boulevard and I-80 interchange area has attracted both residential and commercial development to Mount Arlington.
Morris County, among the fastest growing counties in the New Jersey, New York, Connecticut metropolitan region, nestles amid rolling hills, broad valleys and glittering lakes approximately 30 miles northwest of New York City.

Since the turn of the century, the character of industry in Morris County has changed from iron mining to research, pharmaceuticals and light manufacturing. The character of the land itself has changed from agricultural to residential. Beautiful homes and gardens predominate, both in housing developments, many of them located on the estates of former millionaires, to small country estates. New construction, both residential, commercial and industrial, is constant. There are large numbers of garden type apartments and condominiums, available too.

Mt. Arlington takes pride in our school system. The Mt. Arlington Public School is located along the eastern bank of Lake Hopatcong. It is a dynamic and successful elementary/middle school with an enrollment of approximately 325 students in grades 3 through 8. Along with well-maintained classrooms, the facility contains a fully equipped computer lab, a modern art and music suite, and a state-of-the-art media center.
