Hackettstown is located on the eastern edge of Warren county, bordered by Morris County, Allamuchy Township, Mansfield Township, and Independence Township, with the Musconetcong River flowing along the town's eastern edge. It is situated between Schooley's and Scott's Mountains, and grew as the center for the surrounding agricultural area, as a service town for those vacationing on Schooley's Mt., and as a center for carriage manufacturing. It is Warren County's second largest municipality.
The old commercial district is well preserved, particularly in the handsome buildings on Main, High and Washington Streets. The state trout hatcheries once located here, used to attract many visitors, although there are still hatcheries in town, the trout hatchery open to the public is in Pequest.
Hackettstown experienced a rapid growth from 1960 to 1970. With almost an 80% increase in population during this period, and an average of 31% from 1970 to 1989, Hackettstown attracted businesses that are superior in quality and service. Shopping malls, fast food restaurants and the Main Street shopping center, seem to flourish beautifully between the town's historic old Victorian homes and the varied modern residences. As you walk through Hackettstown, a tapestry unfolds past historic homes, landmarks, and majestic trees lining the streets. Surrounded by smaller rural townships, Hackettstown itself is well developed and features a multitude of apartment buildings, single family homes, small industrial parks, and the Hackettstown Community Hospital. A facility completed in 1973, containing 106 beds, providing emergency care 24 hours a day, as well as a wide range of diagnostic and outpatient services.
