Crown Point clearly has a hometown atmosphere, with its historic downtown square, numerous unique shops, parks, golf courses, and other scenic locales; yet Crown Point is in close proximity with Chicago, Lake Michigan beaches, area waterparks, and more, more, more.
On October 31st of 1834, Solon Robinson and his family become first settlers to an area that later became Crown Point. Robinson funded the first county courthouse, which was built in the summer of 1837 and cost $500.
Crown Point has several historic claims-to-fame. It hosted the Cobe Cup Car Race (a precursor to the Indianapolis 500), which was won by Louis Chevrolet. Also, the Lake County Courthouse became a well-known "marriage mill," uniting record-breaking numbers of couples and famous couples such as Rudolph Valentino and Winifred DeWolfe.
Over the years, Crown Point has done well to preserve its small town heritage through it preservation of its courthouse and historic homes. Yet Crown Point continues to expand through commercial, industrial and residential development.
