Another community devastated by Hurricane Charley in 2004, Arcadia, Florida is DeSoto County’s county seat and only incorporated community. Its population is slightly over 7,000. Agriculture is the bulwark of the local economy, including citrus, cattle, and watermelon. Arcadia also has experienced a surge in growth as a bedroom community for residents commuting to their work locations in other counties. Snowbirds from the north during the winter provide an added boost the local economy.
