West Palm Beach was incorporated on November 5, 1894, and is thus the oldest city in Palm Beach County. It has a population of 107,607 in the city, proper, but a population nearing 1.3 million in its urban area. Since its founder encouraged a baseball team owner to consider West Palm for spring training over a hundred years ago, the area now is home to several collegiate and professional sports teams for their annual spring training. The area also has significant educational, artistic and cultural activity. During the 1920's West Palm Beach neighborhoods boomed in development. Today, with more than 40 established Home Owner Association and Concerned Citizen Organizations, the City continues to grow with several historic districts based on their unique characteristics. Much of the West Palm urban area lies west of the city and includes communities such as Belvedere Estates, Lake Patrick, Westgate, Lakeside Green, Century Village, Bahama Heights, Golden Lakes Estates, and Drexel Park.
